Introducing Me: April Federico

 Introduction


Hi, my name is April Federico, and I am a Rhode Island College Master's Student in the MAT in Elementary Education program. I am also a K-2 Self-Contained Special Education Teacher at Alfred A. Lima Sr. Elementary School in Providence, RI! 


Fun facts about me:


1.) I do tarot on the side of my full-time job. (My business name is In The Pink, Inc.)

2.) My bachelor's and talent are in Creative Writing (from Roger Williams University).

3.) I love pilates and yoga.

4.) I love Taylor Swift music.

5.) I have been dating my boyfriend, Mark, for four and a half years and counting!

6.) I established a scholarship in my late second cousin's name, called the Michelle Andreotolla Pothier Memorial Fund, for high school seniors planning to pursue education as a career.

7.) I am originally from Medfield, Massachusetts.

8.) I went to a small private Catholic institution in Newton, MA called Mount Alvernia High School (since been bought by Boston College!).

9.) I love cats.

10.) I love to learn!

What is Normal? "Questioning Customs" By Khan April Federico        One quote from the clip of "Class Dismissed" was "you're going to school to take your place." And by “place,” the narrator meant society. I remember when I was in eighth grade, the very first thing we talked about in Mrs. McConnell’s English class was about being an individual in society, and little did I know that would be an imperative topic for that whole year. That whole year I was persecuted by peers and teachers for being different. Teachers, especially my math teacher, told me, even when I was vigorously taking notes, came up to my desk and said “you need to put more effort into things, all you do is just sit there.” I was hoping she’d come to my desk to tell me I was doing a good job. By Caroline Miller | Viewing Neurodiversity As An  "Asset" By April Federico     Based on the article from the Child Mind Institute, the neurodiversity movement reframes neurological differences not as deficits to be cured , but as valuable variations of the human experience. This perspective strongly resonates with my own experience working in special education, where I witnessed firsthand that many students labeled as “behind” or “difficult” were often some of the most creative, insightful, and innovative thinkers in the classroom when given the right support.
